Q Creating effective job applications requires you to understand and implement specific rhetorical conventions. Above all, you need to be mindful of your audience and pay special attention to what the employer values and requires. Using the guidelines in Chapter 12, write a cover letter and a résumé in response to a posting for: a) a job you will be qualified for upon graduation (Only select this option if you are graduating in May); or b) an internship; or c) an application for graduate school. (Please contact me if you select this option, as the requirements will be different. You will need to prepare a curriculum vitae instead of a résumé, and a letter of intent (or statement of interest) instead of a cover letter. Note: You may use a previously prepared résumé and cover letter for this assignment; however, you will need to revise them to tailor the job requirements. Getting Started 1. Research and select a current and actual job or internship posting. Save it. You will need to submit it with your peer review and completed assignment. The Smith Career Center website provides helpful job search information to Bradley students. Visit the website to get started on this assignment (he link is listed below.) Once on the site, scroll down and click on "Find a job/internship." You will be prompted to log in with your BU credentials to access resources: https://www.bradley.edu/offices/student/scc/Links to an external site. 2. Prepare a résumé and a cover letter specifically tailored to the position you have selected. Format and Required Documents to Be Submitted • If you have extensive work experience and involvement in activities, select the most relevant ones for your résumé. Contrary to what you may have heard previously, your résumé can be longer than one page. • Your cover letter must fit on one page and should be formatted as a full-block or modified style business letter (see files folder for Unit 2 for model documents). Proofread your letter carefully; it must be free of grammatical errors. • job/internship/graduate school posting. Grades and Grading Standards Below is the breakdown of points for Unit 2.
